Today’s art project helped us learn about those artists who lived many years ago, in prehistoric times. By looking at their art, we can learn things about how they lived and what their lives were like. We can even guess what they thought about and why they made art.

Life back then was very different from life now, mostly because people lived much more simply. People who lived long ago didn’t live in houses the way we do now. They lived mostly in caves, which protected them from the rain or snow.

Some people think that the cavemen drew things they hoped would happen, like catching a large animal to feed their families. Other people think the pictures told of things that already happened, sort of like a family memories album

Here is the video of the cave paintings we watched:

Here are some of the students creating their own cave art using charcoal just like the cavemen!

Afterwards we did a reflection on our learning, thinking about what we learnt and what questions we would ask if we met cavemen today.

Here are some samples of the students fantastic work!

Blog response: What did you learn about pre-historic art today? (who made it, why did they make it, what was the art of?)

This week we are looking at Egyptian artwork. Egyptian artists had to follow a lot of rules. There were rules about how things should be drawn and painted. People were drawn from the front, but their legs had to turn sideways and their heads had to be sideways too.

Education was very important to the ancient Egyptians. Back then, not everyone was allowed to go to school. Some children had to stay and do housework or cooking for the whole family. So when kids got to go to school they were so lucky, and so happy.

One thing Egyptian children learned at school was how to write. But they didn’t use ABC’s like we do. They had a different kind of alphabet. They used little pictures. These small pictures were known as hieroglyphs. School aged children would spend much of their time copying these pictures out in different ways to create different messages.

  1. Hi Miss Sims,
Today I had lots of fun drawing my cave art. I learnt that people lived in caves and drew on the walls. They drew animals like snakes and fish, as well as people and trees. They made a fire to keep warm in the cave.
